Hello everyone! Since I found out that Sophie produces his tracks with Elektron Monomachine I've wanted to know if it's possible to get similar effect using some computer software or something cheaper. Lots of love!

Yes and No. I own a Monomachine. The main thing that makes the Monomachine so special is how tightly integrated the sequencer of the machine is with the sound generators, which I haven't seen replicated with any computer software as of yet. The Monomachine and all of Elektron's gear utilizes a unique concept called 'Parameter Locks' which means each 'note' or 'step' triggered can have wildly different sounds from the preceding or following note or step.
One of the keys to SOPHIE's sound is a lot of the percussive and strange sounds she uses is created by playing with the DigiPro Beat Box internal machines on the Monomachine and playing with the Re-trig and Re-timing settings and doing a lot of parameter locks (the essential popping sounds on Vyzee are essentially all the Monomachine and sequencing those parameters).
So yes, while the sound generating capabilities of the Monomachine can be replicated elsewhere (the Monomachine has FM synthesis, subtractive synthesis, and SID Chip emulation) with software you can't easily replicate the Monomachine's sounds with software because the sequencer isn't found anywhere else.

Yeah the parameter thing seems really cool. I'm going to attempt to make a plugin for Reason that gives me that functionality

What other artists use the Monomachine? Sophie sounds wildly unique because of how he uses it, but he can't be the only one

She uses the FM machines on the Monomachine a lot in MSMSMSM and Charli XCX's Vroom Vroom, but I honestly don't hear much of it elsewhere. A lot of it is the subtractive synthesis modes on the Monomachine and the sample and waveform based DigiPro machines. |

I was just giving people a direction to get started in case they are interested in sound design. |

The Japanese bonus track of 'Get Higher' from PRODUCT is a great example of what the Monomachine can do. Nearly all of it is from the Monomachine, especially the rapid chords where she adjusts the decay on them (not the high pitched 'screeching' ones although that's the Mono too, just a different machine). That's the DigiPro Ensemble machine on the Monomachine.

Specifically the percussive and, well, Bipp-y stuff, I was under the impression that a lot of the textures were FM based |
