You may have never known, but it wasn't too far beneath the surface. POC have to face constant micro-aggressions (anywhere from "wow you look so exotic!" to "if the US gets in a conflict with the Middle East, who's side would you take?"). "wow you look so exotic" isn't racist & literally no one has ever said the other thing before. At least not in Atlanta

Also why "you look exotic" is a microgtession has been written about so many times.

At least not in Atlanta The other thing was said to my mother by a coworker and we live in Georgia (albeit not Atlanta). Also why "you look exotic" is a microgtession has been written about so many times. if anything it's a compliment if someone says you look so exotic, it's used by people who just want to have a way of saying 'you look beautiful'. i can see how someone can take offense to that, but that's on them. like if i met someone who feels threatened when they recieve compliments like that, i wouldnt know how to talk to them because it'd be like walking on eggshells. i'd also feel like a dick if I jump in & tell someone to not compliment a person who is most likely okay with it. also i've lived in rural white majority places in georgia as well. Rural enough where the few black boys have confederate flags on their belt buckles to schools, ect. & the most that i could ever pick up on as far as a 'microagression'(such a new word lol), is a white girl saying that my black friend had an "interesting name". still they became friends with us afterwards, but those little comments aren't a big deal & certainly don't contribute to this awful 1940s nazi rhetoric being spewed down in charlottesville. Lack of exposure is what creates those sorts of comments, & if those people actually say things like that, it's best to like take them as compliments & you can actually change their perception rather than lecturing them on how a comments = to "you're so beautiful" or "i think your name is unique" are bad things to say. but that thing about your mom is some scary stuff, gratefully i've never heard any of that but yes people should step in for that. that's some actual racist shit & i feel for your mom. however i still think its important to not group actual scary political racist questions like that in the same category as "you look so exotic & pretty" tbh

I never said being called exotic was as bad as what was said to my mother. It is still a microaggression though. Also exotic doesn't mean the same thing as beautiful. The closest thing to a compliment that "you're so exotic" could mean is "your foreignness makes you really pretty". Otherwise it just sounds like you're comparing me to a pineapple or a plant. If you don't see what's wrong with that, then i can't help you. I would advise you to do some research on these types of things though, as many POC have different perspectives on these things and I can't speak for every person of color and say that everyone has my opinion

Yeah but, given everything that happened some years ago, isn't it completely baffling that nazis still exist? And, to add insult to injury, they're American? Like, the country that was the most anti-nazi of them all? Nazism was inspired but how Europeans came to America and slaughtered Native Americans and enslaved Africans. Black Americans have been telling the world about these white supremacists and nazis since the beginning. Hitler and all those other dictators were inspired by how Europeans colonized and oppressed the world. It's in black music and black entertainment. We've been talking about it for a long time. For me, it's not baffling at all cause whether people identify as white supremacists or Nazi's or not. People of color deal with outward racism and micro aggressions and stuff all the time. It's not even an American thing, it's global. And even then, America is really one of the few who are actually still having a war about it, and it's mostly on the white side cause 90% of white people dont wanna admit what's actually going on.

So a lot of use "exotic" amongst each other. It's not oppressive depending on who and what is happening. But when a white person calls a person of color "exotic" it's offensive. Not only that, but it's a fetishization of that person of color. It's dehumanizing. White people arent part of certain conversations that people of color have amongst each other. White people just need to learn their boundaries. Instead of trolling and bothering poc, they should be educating themselves on white supremacy and the socially acceptable racism that plagues this country. And then the world. Cause trolling makes the person just as bad as the kkk and white supremacists. They're all in the same boat.

It's not people of color's jobs to educate you. Your lack of wanting to understand what people of color are saying makes you just as bad as the Nazi's and white supremacists. Learn what microagressions, subconscious biases actually are. Just cause you're blind to it, doesn't mean it's not there. Learn that poc have to assimilate to white dominant culture to survive. Racism never went away. Don't speak over poc cause that's what you're doing. Stfu and listen. Respect this person's life experience and move on. How you feel or your experiences with race doesn't matter if you're ignoring facts. Fact is. You're wrong.

That's literally what the persons intention is, & they have no intention of doing any harm with it. If you can't handle that, sorry life is too tough for you. & I'm glad you don't see it as being racist, but the way you paired it up for your high school short essay certainly read as if you grouped them in the same category when they couldn't be any different.

You're wrong. not all non-white people agree with this bullshit & think "you look so exotic" said by anyone is deeply racist & dehumanizing. Certainly not my black ex, or any of the black people I've known. In fact most don't. & no that doesn't make me as bad as nazi's & white supremacists, that's fucking embarrassing that you actually are stupid enough to believe that. & the sad thing is, is that I'm probably more educated than you but I don't go flying off the rails telling other people to educate themselves before talking to me. "STFU & listen to what I say" do you even read what you type

Did you just pull an "I have black friends" argument? lmao
Funny that I was banned for a misunderstanding, but this person here is full-on defending racism for several posts...

Yeah they were banned. If after you explain why something is offensive, someone tries to defend racism and dehumanization of non-white people by saying "If you can't handle that, sorry life is too tough for you", I don't see any other choice.
