This is a complex question, but what I can say off the top of my head is that there are many approaches to being an artist. I personally try to balance the conceptualism of my music with what is true to me and my emotions/personality and what I feel drawn to express. I love when each song shows a different color and side of my personality. Often, there might be a handful of some songs that go together really well, and at other times, the songs can feel separated, due to what I was influenced by at the time I made them. The cohesiveness in a body of work can come from aesthetic, lyrics, themes, point of view... But, it takes time to pin that down, especially if you're like me and like many things and have a wide array of influences. It can be a trying process, but you've got to just keep making more and more songs and learning from more and more people who have experience and knowledge. You've got to do what feels genuine to you and pick your collaborators wisely too (if you have/need/want collaborators). The people around you can be damaging or uplifting...it's up to you to listen to your instincts and protect yourself and your goals.

Oh and this is something I stress a lot to myself- Don't be precious. You often may come across a situation where another presents you with an opportunity but it's not quite exactly how you'd want it to be. Don't be stubborn...say yes. It may not turn into much anyway, but you'll meet someone important through it who will lead you to another bigger opportunity to get you that much closer to your goals. You have to stay humble and pay your dues and be willing to put in way more work than you feel is "fair." A career like this is going to be filled with feelings of being let down and having your heart broken, but you'll find the strangest things you said yes to will pay off in ways you couldn't have imagined.
