@matt , I personally think it is. Especially when the gender politics of SOPHIE's work is a key feature of his art. I think alongside the capitalist satire, they're also strong gender/queer theory infused motifs in his work for which we necessarily have to understand his standpoint for critique. If xe's not comfortable answering it, I won't push it. But like it's definitely a fair question. nope 'gender politics' is absolutely not a key feature of his music in any capacity. yeah, lets not ask about him about any of that tbh He's a guy performing under a female name. He's had people in drag pretend to be him on stage. Not sure how you can say gender politics aren't part of what he's doing.

designed to be pop music and pop music only This the sticking point 4 me. I agree with you to an extent... but can't we hold both concepts in our heads at the same time? Can we enjoy music as an hedonistic experience (pop for pop sake), and at different times analyse critical as part of a critical tradition?? Honestly some of the analysis is simply exhausting + quite boring and tbh I'm not that engaged in it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a place in assessing the music we love. I like to think of it as another layer to song/ album structure- as well as key/tempo etc. changes and whether they work to create a cohesive piece, we can analyse the politics presented in the music (unavoidably, as any music is open to a myriad interpretations) and whether it is internally consistent and what we think it means. As deathworld said above, whether we're that interested in it or not (I personally Really! Don't! Care! That! Much! at this moment in time), SOPHIE has played with gender expectation by choosing a female moniker and selecting a trans woman to represent him at Boiler Room. These are facts open to analysis-whether you're interested in the meaning (intended or interpreted) or not. Most of the original critical analysis makes me sleepy, but the inevitable 'what's the point of examining this anywayy' makes me sleepy 2. Maybe I just need more sleep.

Oh, here's a question I've been meaning to ask for a while: Was your fashion sense at all influenced by the character of Pino Petto in the 1991 horror classic Silent Night, Deadly Night 5?

Keith_Courage haha I had only seen the first up until a few months ago when a theater was doing marathons of 5th installments of horror movies and the entire time I was watching it I was like "holy shit that's SOPHIE". but yea those movies definitely walk the line between so bad it's good and just plain bad

I forgot to ask about whether the BWIW2B demo will ever see the light of day though Probably not since it would be a breach of contract. The song belongs to Namie now.

Just weighing in on the etiquette questions people were mulling over in this thread... IMO it absolutely is polite and appropriate to ask someone what their preferred pronouns are. It helps you avoid misgendering the person, which is not only rude but can be very hurtful. If someone is offended by this question, it's probably because they're cis, and it won't be actively harmful to them. It is important to remember that preferred pronouns don't necessarily indicate anything about a person's gender identity. This is something I've only really learned in the past year or so, but it's very important. For example, someone could use he/him pronouns and still be genderqueer or nonbinary. Asking questions that probe further into people's gender or sexuality are more of a gray area and should be relevant to the conversation/appropriate for the closeness of your relationship. Are they talking with you about the orgy they had last weekend? Probably fine to ask about the gender of their sexual partners. Did you just meet 5 minutes ago and you're talking about shoes? Probably not the time to ask about their relationship with their body/genitals and whether they experience gender dysphoria. I know it's too late for this to affect OP's meeting with Sophie but I wanted to put in my two cents anyway.
