PIG's prediction/speculation of musical trends for 2017: www.theguardian.com/music/2017/jan/05/global-grime-political-struggle-and-a-chinese-pop-explosion-what-will-be-2017s-music-trends''I don’t know if it’s going to happen in 2017 or 2030, but I’m sure there’s going to be a big crossover Asian act who will sweep the floor in the global music market. In 2015, I worked with a Chinese musician called Chris Lee, and the ambition and money behind her project was incredibly exciting because China’s creative industry is very new. I became fascinated by their pop market and can imagine an Asian star or group with enough awareness of a western audience totally dominating. I had a meeting with Syco, Simon Cowell’s label, and I know he’s very interested in the Korean boyband market. As long as they don't take a leaf from the management books over in kpop. They are really cruel to their idols. But I've been waiting for kpop to take over, thought it might happen with Psy, 2ne1, SJ and that sudden movement in '10-12. But we're gonna need something that isn't trying to pander to american audience *cough CL cough* to really break through. That being said, kpop has never been more prominent internationally and I hope it grows.

I think we are probably going to see a powerful sense of struggle among a lot of artists. It’s been a dull past five years culturally, and I think we’re going to hear what a few years of a neoliberal approach to cultural management sounds like when people get very frustrated and angry. I think there will be artists who come through who are in their very existence political without having to attach themselves to any specific agenda. Just being present musically or even being alive is a political act in itself. One thing I’m worried about is a “new rock revolution”. In 1999, Billy Childish insisted painting was the only true form of art: it suddenly birthed the stuckist art movement, a contemporary conformist aesthetic. It’s where this bearded hipster idea came from, and bands such as the Libertines. It was so conservative compared to what was going on with Aphex Twin and the other fantastic art in the early 00s. I’m worried about a conservative backlash, in which someone demands we go back to playing guitars and banjos because that’s the only true form of expression.'' I've met Billy Childish, bit of a dickhead. Aren't like Mumford+ Sons modern days Stuckists? I defo know people that only listen to jangly guitar men because pop is too 'Mainstream' or w/e See also: Ed Sheeran. That one Robyn cover by an X Factor winner that was infinitely inferior, but praised because with a guy singer it confered 'genuine emotion' or w/e

I guess it's less a sincere + concerted artist led effort to regress- like the stuckists- and more down to public perception. That said, when record execs (not to sound like a conspiracy theorist lol) sign off this stuff, they're definitely thinking of marketing it in a certain way so...

Oh damn that's a cool interview. I also thought CL was going to be that Asian pop star but I haven't heard anything since Doctor Pepper came out. Weren't she, Diplo, and OG Maco working together? There was at least a photo shoot.
I do see GUITAR MUSIC coming back soon, but in my mind it will be from people like AG who are coming at it from a pop perspective and pushing things forward, not from a reactionary force. I think the nu metal stylings of the Bitch Better Have My Money remix and the break on Danny's ATAP remix show a hint of the early 2000's inspired guitar music that is on the way back in.

She's been managed in the US by Scooter Braun, but he's too busy being a zionist on Twitter

Sucks cuz Baddest Female goes SO hard Also I realized Doctor Pepper was the OG Maco, Diplo song... lol I have not seen his Twitter presence. He seems to know what he's doing with all his other pop stars so maybe something cool is in the works. With 2NE1 breaking up she's probably focusing on her solo career I feel like the first step in an Asian pop artist crossing over would be doing a Pentatonix collab to put them on the map with all the 11 year olds

Winner lost Nam Taehyun and they never finished their EXIT series, only released Exit:E before the concept was scrapped. T.O.P is serving his mandatory military service and the rest of Big Bang have to follow in the next few years which means their biggest cash cow is gone. Lee Chanhyuk is going to military after AKMUs comeback which leaves Lee Suhyun stuck in the dungeon for 2 years. It took over a year for Big Bang to formally finish their MADE album which consisted of 3 new songs and I bet was only released because of T.O.P going to the military soon. YG is terrible at managing their groups and they hardly ever release much which spells disaster for CL in the states. The only solo song CL has released that wasnt produced by Teddy (In House producer at YG) is Dr. Pepper and her tour was apparently full of 2NE1 songs. As long as YG is apart of CLs US promotions it's going to be terrible and she won't make it imo.
