I know there's a thread about pop music somewhere in the archives but I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread about pop songs that we think are awesome and reasons why. Also let's try to stay away from songs that EVERYONE knows are brilliant pop songs/well known and critically acclaimed, like Run Away With Me and Dancing on My Own (Robyn version obvi). Also NO PC MUSIC
My first picks rn are:
Clearest Blue - CHVRCHES: The song starts with quiet arpeggios and hushed verses and choruses, but they gradually build and build until the song bursts into euphoria for the second half of the song. In the second half, I love that it never dies down, and that the verse melody and previous chorus are never heard here.
Utopia - Austra: A banger that also manages to be incredibly soothing. The vocals are amazing (like every austra song), and while there are some chordal changes, the song revolves around Bb Major for the most part, especially in the bassline.
Broken Over You - Grace Mitchell: Great vocal harmonies, this song showcases the power of sidechained pads and minimal percussion
Law of Attraction - Katie Rush: Holy shit this song never got the attention it deserved. I read about it in the Fader and 3 years after it came out, it's still a summery bop. Think an 80s summery Everything is Embarrassing.
U Turn Me Up - Ducky: Everyone listened to Work and kinda ignored this previous song. The complex ethereal chords in the background compliment the very sweet melody of the vocals. The minimal production also works really well.
Anything Anna of the North has ever released ever - I'm fucking serious. Every single song of hers is perfection, and her debut is coming out later this year.
IDK if HANA's Avalanche is super acclaimed or not, but I did see a lot about it when it came out, so I'm not covering that. It would also be unfair to cover Grimes and iamamiwhoami bc they've reached a fairly good level of underground success.

You guys don't know her but she's from around 2009-2010 and her music leaked like crazy and now she manages an artist. But her album "Electrick Hotel" is finally on iTunes (as of last year) after 6 years, even though it leaked. And her album is amazing. Truly underrated. Still a pop icon in my eyes. Her album is amazing after all these years.
Kerli is extremely underrated period. Saved Demi's career. Basically birthed Lady Gaga. This song is amazing and always reminds me of how she's able to make such beautiful lyrics even on dance songs. And her friend Vespertine who did the production and the photoshoots and the artwork is literally a creative mastermind. And I truly believe they were a match made in heaven. Her Utopia EP is amazing. Her leaked songs are as well. She's a better songwriter than Sia in my opinion.
74M views on YouTube and I never heard this song once on the radio. Can we talk about how extremely underrated Nicole is as an artist and the fact that she almost was a solo artist before they Stuck the other 4-5 girls behind her. They were all her songs. But this song in particular has an amazing production. When that acoustic guitar comes in, it's amazing. Truly a masterpiece.
Speaks for itself.
This is such a good song. I love the production A LOT. She sounds just so chill on it. Whenever I hear this, I feel like I'm in Totally Spies living the lavish life.
Fairly new but honestly if Demi Lovato sang this (her and Halsey have the same tone), it'd basically save her career. This whole album is underrated and it's being kinda ignored almost. I recommend it to everybody.
Underrated flop dance album of the century. Emancipate is a standout. Each song is perfection. She truly did THAT. Get into Kelis. Everything she does is underrated af.
Last but not least, Monday Morning by Christina Aguilera. This song was written by Santigold! Bionic is probably one of the only albums I can say that was extremely ahead of its time. Introduced the pop world to Sia, production is amazing. Switch really did THAT on production. She really gave us a lot of diversity in vocals. She also wanted to work with Charli XCX when she was making the album. Another standout is Elastic Love which was written and co-produced by M.I.A.

I knew right away that people would just use this thread to plug whatever mainstream songs or mainstream artists they like and think are "underrated", even if they're not, so I didn't even bother. Good luck, Dvnots.

Good luck, Dvnots. I mean she said "songs". There are songs that mainstream artists put out and pay the song dust and it's usually their more interesting and best songs. And I featured a few mainstream and you went ahead and ignored the other non mainstream ones. So that's all you. Mainstream artists can make underrated music. Besides that all the songs I put up are songs that I personally feel are underrated. Not everything is just some faux alternative white person with mediocre talent. You can miss me with that shit.

I've posted this in another thread, but it still doesn't get enough love. Ace of Base might be well known for The Sign but this is their best, most euphoric and uplifting song. The way the hu drums, vocals, synth, and that huge, delicious bass come together in the chorus is heavenly, and the melody during the verses is insanely infectious. You hardly even notice that the lyrics make no sense.
An even lesser-known song, but this group and track in general are super underappreciated. These jazzy sci-fi chord changes and harmonies are too tasty.
Dessert are one of the few only other pop acts besides PC Music that are bringing unexpected musical and production complexity into the standard pop formula. Their quality is hit and miss but this song is a huge banger. I love the meter change at the beginning and the way the "drop" totally subverts expectations. Really dope.
I found Sophie and Peter Johnson by pure chance on YouTube one day and am so glad I did. This is some of the most uplifting and gorgeous pop music I've ever heard. The sound design detail and their taste in bright sounds paired with unexpected melodies and transitions is endlessly relistenable to me, and Sophie's voice is gorgeous. Criminal that they've been ignored by history.
TOPS are my favorite guitar group of the moment. Total 80's throwbacks but their sense of songwriting is superb. They just put out their third album and it's definitely their "mature" record but they pull it off. The lyrics and emotions expressed are all very relevant to how I've been feeling lately. I'm obsessed with the chorus here.
Finally, my favorite band of all time, Severed Heads, the brainchild of production mastermind Tom Ellard. There are literally dozens of songs I could pull out as examples of his genius but this is probably their most immediately accessible song. Probably never made it big because of his voice, but everything else about this bumps and still sounds modern.

I have to agree with you on Wynter, though. She could have been the new Kelis. Those EPs are so good. Especially this song:
