I didn't really know where else to put this, but here's some cool insight into how SOPHIE uses the Monomachine. www.oninstagram.com/photo/sophie-msmsmsm-monomachine-atvojeruce-818832469368081211_1269983937I am surprised SOPHIE doesn't have it MIDI synced to anything and only uses two the two main stereo outs. But its really cool to a. see how much of their live sets are actually coming from the Monomachine. and b. what you can actually get out of that box and just 6 lines of monophonic synthesis (basically, I am glad I have one). More insight to what SOPHIE’s doing: On the camera left there's a series of 6 green lights. Throughout portions of it they are muting the 6 individual tracks. One track is probably one set of percussive sounds one is probably dedicated to a ‘melody’ etc. At the beginning SOPHIE is also picking specific patterns (bars) of music.

Ahhhh this is awesome shinhito. You have a monomachine? I'm thinking of investing in one but am a bit scared off by what I assume to be a pretty tough learning curve. How Long does it take to wrap your head around it? I have been using ableton for about 5 years now but have very little experience with hardware.

Yeah, I have the original Elektron trio actually. I first got the Machinedrum, followed by the Monomachine with the Octatrack. The Machinedrum took barely anytime at all to learn and get amazing results out of, the Monomachine took me a good couple of hours to get going just because there are a bit more "menus" to dive through, but really I'd say after having it about a week I was good to go. Octatrack is the most complex of them all, but a lot of the same concepts carry over through Elektron Machines so it felt familiar. Then again I don't do much complex work with the Octatrack, I mainly use it live as a sample triggerer and an effects box of sorts. I don't do any crazy realtime sampling with it or anything (yet). I wouldn't be too scared of the Monomachine. Elektron's manuals are FANTASTIC. Seriously, I wish they got better recognition for their manuals because they're easy to follow and walks you through the machines very nicely. If you are familiar with Ableton, have some basic knowledge of subtractive synthesis and some knowledge about audio in general I think you will be fine. It's designed to be easily useable. The other great thing Elektron has done is they've put together some great basic videos to get you up and going with these machines so check those out and if you follow those pretty well, I think you'd be good! www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2K8lWfMAB0

Oh my goodness that's awesome!
See in that video SOPHIE has the Monomachine connected to MIDI In to tempo sync it (I am guessing)

Looked at the Instagram account of the person who posted that first video, looks like he is involved with Turban Radio Wave and I'm guessing the video is from the same time period when SOPHIE did an interview with someone from there (possibly the same person?) Not bored enough to do more sleuthing rn but +1 to the power of extreme boredom lol

Yay for productive boredom!
I have to add one more really nerdy music production observation. On the Monomachine, patterns can be extended up to 4 bars in length (64 steps which defaults to 1x speed but can be changed to 2x speed too SOPHIE is running it in 1x on both videos), but in both videos SOPHIE is only running the patterns with only one page of the pattern activated (16 steps).
I just thought that was strange especially with how complex his music is. What I couldn't see is if SOPHIE is running it in ‘SONG mode’, which would chain multiple patterns together, but again that seems like a complicated way when you could just have 4 bars to easily jam with.

Hi there all, here is your person who posted the vid on Instagram, is involved with Turban Radio Wave (check Unreleased Tielsie Tracks + AG/SOPHIE/PAYPAL track threads here :-) ) and was granted by the interview SOPHIE gave him just before he hit Prague for the 100th Anniversary Party of Turban Radio Wave show (from which is the Instagram video). Great digging there - I have to admit, that concerning SOPHIE and PC Music (but mostly SOPHIE, as my obsession with him goes way deeper in the past) is just the same as yours there and I also come here to get all the updates! Such a wonderfully curious community, got to say! Btw I upload the whole vid that you saw part of on Instagram here for your (g)listening pleasure (actually I have more of them but as SOPHIE kindly asked me to keep his looks and physical appearance obscured, here goes only the one with his hands :-) ) vid.me/P2CGCheers!

To anyone wanting to replicate these sounds without the use of a monomachine, there are a few things I would recommend. 1. Drumboxx - Windows only, but is great for designing drums with tons of presets. 2. Ableton Operator - Really powerful for FM synthesis. I use it for making leads and bass kicks and stuff. 3. Synth1 - Amazing FM synthesis tool for creating new synths. I usually have no clue what I'm doing and I jst keep twisting random nobs to make new sounds. It's a lot of fun.
