As far as I'm concerned, I think its a no brainer as a listener and a fan to do the best you can to divorce the official PC Music releases from pretty much every other artist in the conversation at hand (Personally, I go with the genre classification of "Etc" for the jabronis that make up the peripheral acts). Not that there aren't some good artists makin' solid tunes sonically on the outskirts of the temple but the difference between the house that A. G., Danny, Finn, and co. built and pretty much everyone else is night(core) and day. Personally, it just BAFFLES me that I even have to feel the need to explain to y'all just how blatant the divide I'm speaking of is... Additionally true in terms of overall musical proficiency and talent, PC Music is on another fuckin' planet in terms of aesthetic when compared to the rest of the artists that comprise the godforsaken "scene" at hand. As PC Music manages to formulate not only individual aesthetics across their roster but additionally an overarching label aesthetic that is seamless, concurrent, and goddamn hard earned, everyone else pretty much rests on the played out simpleton aesthetic laurel of "cute." Motherfuck cute. I feel like the fanbase is making moves comparable to lumping the Velvet Underground and Good Charlotte together with no regard for a hierarchy or an originator and its soooooo disheartening. I recognize this forum/"community" is predominately shits and gigs, good vibes and sunshine but I can't help but get livid when the most exciting thing in music today is simultaneously misunderstood and ignored by the press and its own fan base. Are you serious? That's just about the snobbiest thing I've read on these forums. It's fucking music and you are grading it like there is just no equal to PC Music. Listen to Activia Benz's releases and tell me they don't have some amazing and unique releases. Fucking snobby comment, dude. No need to get livid about such a damned inane discussion, calm the hell down. AG isnt god he's a mid 20s producer making interesting music like lots of other people. You are putting the pussy on a pedestal. Ugh. PC Music are very different from other musically similar artists because of the conceptual side, but I would still put them in the same playlist and that's my criteria for genre really. Tbh I see a lot of diversity within even the official label members both musically and conceptually, so... Idk.

I personally don't believe in genres. One of the most frustrating things to me is when I go into a music store and I am trying to find a specific musician but it's all separated out into genres like "Electronica", "Hip-Hop", "Rock/Pop", etc.
Take for example Jamie xx. Where would you file him under using those previous genre descriptors I mentioned? My initial reaction was to search under "Electronica", but nope! He ended up being under "Rock/Pop".
Another one was Hot Chip. I figure that would be under "Rock/Pop", but nope! They were under "Electronica".
Now imagine if it was all just ordered in alphanumeric order? Bliss!
I can understand though why people want a snappy descriptor in order to quickly inform people what a certain artist sounds like, but to be honest every artist is their own genre.
SOPHIE and A.G. Cook's music have stylistic similarities, but they're still so different from each other.
So in iTunes I just turn off the genre column, and when people ask me what kind of music PC Music & Co. is, I just say "It's good music."

i mean....... just to play devils advocate slightly, who here would pay *actual money* for a Activia Benz or Manicure record? i know it's super crass to bring money into this but i feel like there clearly is a distinction as a listener between something which is available for free on Soundcloud and something that can be purchased IRL (Sophie, Felicita, fingers crossed for some AG eventually) ( i know) |

I would totally pay for an Activia Benz 12" release of some sort. I would've bought that balloon release they did if it wasn't ridiculously expensive (i might be remembering poorly tho) and very vague. Manicure I'd have more reservations about depending on what it was, but still it'd be cool to see it exist

I think the lack of new PC Music this year is making everyone restless and agitated.We have the Henrik the Artist thread if u all want to argue.  As for softcore, I had a New Found Glory shirt in high school that used that term, so I just associate it with pop punk, haha. I came up with Plush. idk. making broad categorizations for a large swathe of different sounding producers is hard. I don't even know what pop means anymore, or why people coined the term 'bubblegum' to describe music. It's not like pop music CDs used to come packaged with bubbalicioius or something. I'm just going to keep making up new genre names when people ask me how to describe it so I come off really pompous and elitist. "Oh you never heard of candywave? GTFO!" |
