I actually like Taylor's music, I wouldn't call myself a fan or anything, but I'm almost always into her singles. But something about her squad of famous women has never sat quite right with me. Also I was #TeamNicki 100% during that embarrassing white feminist incident.

How does everyone feel about the track Azealia Banks put out today? As, uh... controversial as she is on social media, I can't deny that she's one of the most talented rappers regardless of gender in the game right now and I think this is yet another fantastic track from her. soundcloud.com/azealia-banks/1800bigbigbeat (also the site isn't letting me embed soundcloud links for some reason?) For the first minute I was kinda meh about it, but then when the chorus hit, I loved it

This song is amazing. Everything about her is amazing. I wasn't expecting it to sound like this. Weird because the other day I was listening to Sylvester and was thinking how cool it'd be if Azealia made music like this. And there it appeared, The Big Big Beat. She never disappoints. If there's one artist I can stand behind everything about them it's Azealia Banks. She's literally perfect, to me at least. Azealia X SOPHIE would end careers tbh.

Machinedrum made a mashup of an unreleased Jimmy Edgar x SOPHIE collab and Azealia Banks song: m.soundcloud.com/turbanradiowave/jimmy-edgar-sophie-lipstick-facial-x-fan-ft-azealia-banks-snippetI have a longer version that I'll post in a second

I am quite enjoying the new Animal Collective album. Outside of the singles I think Bagels In Kiev and Vertical are my favorite tracks, but I still need to listen to it a bit more. After just one listen I have no idea how I feel about this album yet, but it was enjoyable to listen to anyway. Lying in the Grass is cool. Also I'm super late to this but I finally listened to Anti and I thought it started out very strong and ended kinda weak. Consideration and Needed Me are really, really great. m those two were my favorites along with Higher

Every song on that Selena Gomez album is bomb as fuck, not gonna lie. She's a really great artist, even if she may not write her songs like Taylor (I'm pretty sure Taylor writes most of her songs, not positive). But maybe that's the beauty behind it, Selena doesn't try as hard to be super impressive, it comes naturally (lol no pun intended). Not saying writing your songs is bad, as it's obviously not, but idk, Taylor's lyrical subjects are boring me, and it's not even the crying-over-a-breakup phase anymore. She seems like the "American Sweetheart" that is secretly spiteful behind your back. Her presence is elitist, pretentious, and irritating yet she tries hard to relate to her fans, who are usually none of those things. "Look guys, I'm just like you! I have bad days, like to have fun, and like to talk about boys!!" Who is this demographic you may ask? Teenage girls. Not being sexist or ageist, but it's a TRUE statistic -- most of her fans are teenage girls.
It's this kind of false relationship building between artists and their fans that is ultimately detrimental to the career. Your fans should have a connection with you because they relate to the content you put out in the first place, not because you're trying hard to put out content that you think they'll relate to. That's the whole point of a fanbase. Your music (or art, or writing, whatever) speaks to them, instead of them speaking to you whilst you create your art around their demands. Following the former example, it's an authentic creator-follower bond. There is no fabricated material created for the sole purpose of gaining or maintaining celebrity status.
^That was kind of deep for the subject but it's true -- artists are so desperate to have more, more, more fans that they will suppress their identity and wear a mask that appeals to a broader audience. I really don't care for country music, but I believe her artistic capabilities would shine through more if she wasn't a pop artist.
I think Selena wrote/cowrote a lot on her more recent album. She has a more genuine feel to her music. Like she's trying different things and not making it seem corny. I think she has learned from other writers so much because all her other releases weren't written by her. I think she's learned how to write and try different things with her voice that it works. I can smell that she's starting to get influence from her Mexican family and I love it. I'm hoping for a Spanish album soon. Taylor really needs others to write her own music. She does not know who she is. And she tries to be a "woman" but is still stuck in a teenage girl mindset and image. She's trying so hard to be mature. Then her music sounds like she tossed some random songs together. 1989 sounds like a bunch of demo songs being released as an album and she probably wasn't even trying to do that. Sia just released a bunch of demos as an album and it sounded amazing (but tbh Taylor has nothing on Queen of music Sia). Taylor needs to think about herself. She doesn't know herself. She's very mediocre. And it's weird how her and Selena are friends. Selena's music is better yet has yet to get any real accolades for it. Taylor Swift feed into a very specific market that Selena doesn't fit in. That's the reason Taylor is really a big thing. I feel exactly the opposite about 1989 and Revival. Revival was just mediocre. 1989 was a great pop album. I can't argue with your analysis of them as people, because I don't know enough about their personalities, but Revival was a disposable album with maybe 3 good songs on it. Not much of the album actually feels genuine. The songs that are supposed to be fun sound robotic, and the songs that are supposed to be emotional sound fake. Of course there are a few exceptions, though, and this is just my opinion.

I feel like the songs coulda fit other singers way than Taylor. Revival I think was kinda a test album for Selena. This was her first time writing for real and also not using much autotune. Whereas her other albums, all the songs were hand picked and full of autotune. This isn't her best work but I thought it better than 1989. I felt 1989 was just a collection of random pop songs. It seems so fake to me. And the production is almost too good that the vocals kinda don't sit right on the tracks. I find that Selena seems to do a trial and error with her music. Like what songs work and don't until she finds the right fit. Selena is sorta like the let's go out and drink whereas Taylor is like the let's stay home and play cards. That's how I see it. I think if Taylor found a way to mix country with pop *cough cough avicii* her music might just sound better. I think she has yet to produce a good body of work. Same with Selena, Selena seems to dabble in electronic music and rnb music. I think they both need to work with different group of producers.

Tbh, I'm the type of person that would rather stay home and play cards. I think it's probably just a matter of taste. I can see why people dislike the Taylor album and why people like the Selena album. Revival just doesn't really work for me, and 1989 clicked into place with me. I do agree about 1989 not feeling like a cohesive album though. It does feel like a collection of random pop songs. I just thought the random pop songs were really good.

Is it me or has pop music gotten really boring?? Like I noticed in like 2013 cause I started paying attention to better music that wasn't mainstream and got involved with the EDM world more than I was before. But like Azealia tweeted the mainstream is boring and honestly I have to agree. Like a lot of these albums are just albums. Like they are boring and even The Pink Print was boring even though I'm a hardcore barb but like I was low key bored af. And I feel like it's just America. But idk. Thoughts??

Yeah, I've felt this too in the UK - every time Radio 1 is on it's rare that there's a song I like. I think there's value placed on 'maturity" in pop music now, which just makes everything feel more cynical. There's so many boring "folksy" singers and indistinct alt r&b up-and-comers. I always thought it was our terrible taste, considering we seem to think Ed fucking Sheeran is a heartthrob Basically, free Ke$ha and let her save music again

I always thought it was our terrible taste, considering we seem to think Ed fucking Sheeran is a heartthrob Basically, free Ke$ha and let her save music again I see exactly what you mean by the value of maturity. I think everyone wants that critically acclaimed album and usually those albums happen to be the more broken down and simpler albums. The mainstream has turned into r&B and alt r&b with some electronic hits here and there. Nothing special. I think its cause 2009 - 2012 were highs for music. The mainstream was really at an all time high because we had hit after hit after hit. And thats when it was One Direction, The Wanted, Rihanna, Beyonce, Britney, Kesha, Gaga, Katy, Nicki, Usher, Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Demi, J.Lo, etc, they were all over the place with hits and the mainstream was just thriving. In all of it's genres. Now I feel like Hip Hop and R&B kinda took over that but the stuff that's out by mainstream hiphop/rnb artists arent that good anyways. idk, i just seem really bored witht he mainstream. Underground is always lit but like the mainstream is boring. A lot of the up and coming artists are jut cheaper quality versions of artists that were just popping two years ago. And i think it has to do with the crew of original pop stars from 2008, have grown up and don't make music like they did because they've grown. I think we need a whole new generation of pop stars but i feel like they'll just be reboots of the ones before and it wont sound as good.
