I'm just really upset that someone's work and career could suffer because of one off-handed joke that didn't go over well. I guess if you're going to make a joke about a sensitive topic, you'd better make sure it's funny if you don't want a witch hunt. At the end of the day she dug her own grave. She should of thought more carefully before saying what she did, joke or not. Was her comment that bad that her career deserves to be ruined? Probably not. Has this issue been used by people as a sort of in for going off at PC Music for unrelated criticisms? Yeah. Do people have a right to be upset by what she said? Absolutely. Kinda disgusted by how a lot of you are reacting to people being upset by this. Racism and cultural appropriation are important, sensitive issues that people have every right to be upset by. Calling people "crybabies" or whatever for getting passionate about issues to do with oppression is fucking childish, and acting as if issues of privilege, race, gender etc aren't relevant to music, or aren't worth discussing, is just plain ignorant.

Yeah, it's kinda understandable that we would feel bad for Polly since obviously we all love her, but it's not great that we instinctively have more empathy for her than for the people who were hurt by her comment. (Using "we" to mean myself and anyone who felt the same way, not trying to include anyone whose reaction was different.) I had the same reaction "Poor Polly" at first but then thought "Wait, poor Polly? What about Diabetes? They are the ones who I should be throwing this pity party for..." I do legitimately feel bad for Spinee because she didn't do anything.

Tedious sort of hits the nail on the head with this. Though her comments were put in a crude way and displayed cultural ignorance (joking or not), they did not display cultural contempt. And though one can imply the other, I really don't think that was the case here.

Nobody I know is offended by these comments. I understand she is white, and not poor, and etc etc. But does she have no right to make an ironic statement about cultural appropriation within her own artistic persona without an incredible amount of backlash? She was saying something very similar to le1f and what he said, but in the hyperreality/ignorance/obnoxiousness of the GFOTY persona. I think the phrase "blacked up" is honestly hilarious in that context. It reminds me of someone listening to say, Bonobo a bunch and then calling a traditional tribal band using the same instruments a "blacked up Bonobo." She is presenting herself as someone whose cone of cultural view doesn't escape western culture. UGH I am so angry at all this backlash. Why can't we discuss cultural appropriation in this way but instead have to refer to articles written by tenured professors discussing it in every facet (I know because I've had to read tons of them.)

Nobody I know is offended by these comments. I feel sort of second hand offended by these comments because I'm Swedish and everyone always talks to me about clogs which aren't even Swedish to begin with and I'm a white person. I can't imagine how sickening it is for POC, I bet it's 100x worse. Even if it's a joke, having people say things like this still ware you down because it shows they can't look past that. They see you and all they see is your differences. I still enjoy GFOTYs music and I do think this is a huge shame for spinee but comments like these should just be brushed off, because even if it's a joke it's gonna poke old wounds Basically I'm really disappointed and saddened by this cause GFOTY makes good music but it was really really irresponsible

And I'm from Utah which is super Mormon and everyone assumes I am Mormon. Boo Hoo. Get over it. It is not a joke aimed at POC, how do you not understand that? It's a joke aimed at the appropriation of the cultural heritage of a certain subset of POC.

Doesn't matter who it's aimed at, or that it's a joke. Point is she said something damaging that's gonna reach the people who find it offensive. Black peope will find white people calling each other the n word even if it's not aimed at them or meant to offend them cause regardless it's still offensive to begin with. If it's not affecting you on a personal level how can you say people are overreacting

Intent is the only thing that should matter in situations like this That is pretty much the opposite of how I see things, lol. If you punched someone on accident, they would still be hurt... It's not a perfect analogy but you can unintentionally hurt people with your words and while it's less reprehensible than intentionally hurting them, you can't just get off the hook by saying "But I didn't mean it that way." Polly clearly realizes this or she wouldn't have apologized the way she did... Edit: and like, I still love GFOTY and I do think people who just don't like PC music are using this as an excuse to shit on it. Some people actually seem *happy* this happened so they can say "told you so" or something like that. But some of the reactions defending her bother me just as much as the people going over the top with their criticism.

People defending what she said to this degree is a bit scary tbh. I get the joke she was trying to make but the words she used were STILL crass, incredibly insensitive (hence reaction) and not funny in the slightest. Genuinely hate bringing background into this as people can and should be smart enough to form independent opinions regardless of which pigeon hole they've stuffed into by society but...
(sigh)
...that's kinda how I feel as an actual POC or whatever. I'm only really saying this because we were getting into the realms of hypothetical reactions and I just wanted to add a genuine one. Also, this is obviously just me speaking for myself, not any wider "community".

I'm curious: What if she is in fact a racist? Would you stop listening to her music and PC music?

I'm curious: What if she is in fact a racist? Would you stop listening to her music and PC music? Yes. THAT BEING SAID. I am sorry if anything I said offended anyone, I understand I am not a POC, I just enjoy the art of it all and I feel like she made a very prudent statement about cultural appropriation. If anything I admire the crassness of it because now we have tons of people talking about it. Just wish people saw her comments for what they were instead of being interpreted as racist. I love you guys, and don't want to hurt anyones feelings, but to be blunt I just hate artistic limitations more than I hate people's feelings being hurt.
